Join Us at the “Genius Lounge”

Welcome to the “Genius Lounge,” a new audio series with Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, author of the NY Times bestseller, “Strength in Stillness,” and 50-year teacher of Transcendental Meditation®.

Why do we call it Genius Lounge?

This audio series focuses on the genius of nature, from microscopic to macroscopic, including the genius of the human brain and body. The name was inspired by brain researchers who have identified key networks within the brain that underlie and foster the creative process. One such network is the “Default Mode Network,” which has also been called the “Imagination Network” and the “Genius Lounge.” Innovation gets its start here—and the practice of Transcendental Meditation accelerates the process by strengthening the creative networks within the brain and by removing the restrictive impact of stress.

In each episode, Bob shares a few minutes of exciting research findings on the brain, ancient and modern insights into consciousness, and/or inspiration to live a healthier, happier life.

Heal the Healers: A pilot study evaluating the feasibility, acceptability, and exploratory efficacy of a Transcendental Meditation intervention for emergency clinicians during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic

29 December 2021

Desiree R. Azizoddin PsyD, Noelia Kvaternik MS, PA-C, Meghan Beck BS, Guohai Zhou PhD, Mohammad Adrian Hasdianda MD, MSc, Natasha Jones EdM, Lily Johnsky BSc, Dana Im MD, MPP, Peter R. Chai MD, MMS, Edward W. Boyer MD, PhD

Abstract

Objective

Emergency clinicians face elevated rates of burnout that result in poor outcomes for clinicians, patients, and health systems. The objective of this single-arm pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility of a Transcendental Meditation (TM) intervention for emergency clinicians during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and to explore the potential effectiveness in improving burnout, sleep, and psychological health.

Methods

Emergency clinicians (physicians, nurses, and physician-assistants) from 2 urban hospitals were recruited to participate in TM instruction (8 individual or group in-person and remote sessions) for 3 months. Session attendance was the primary feasibility outcome (prespecified as attending 6/8 sessions), and burnout was the primary clinical outcome. Participant-reported measures of feasibility and validated measures of burnout, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and stress were collected at baseline and the 1-month and 3-month follow-ups. Descriptive statistics and linear mixed-effects models were used.

Results

Of the 14 physicians (46%), 7 nurses (22%), and 10 physician-assistants (32%) who participated, 61% were female (n = 19/32). TM training and at-home meditation practice was feasible for clinicians as 90.6% (n = 29/32) attended 6/8 training sessions and 80.6% self-reported meditating at least once a day on average. Participants demonstrated significant reductions in burnout (P < .05; effect sizes, Cohen's = 0.43–0.45) and in symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep disturbance (P values < .001; Cohen's = 0.70–0.87).

Conclusion

TM training was feasible for emergency clinicians during the COVID-19 pandemic and led to significant reductions in burnout and psychological symptoms. TM is a safe and effective meditation tool to improve clinicians’ well-being.

1. What are the best times of day to meditate?

A New Year’s Resolution to Help You Achieve All Your Resolutions | 6:44

TM practice twice a day enlivens the basis of health and success

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Founder of the TM program, explains the importance of regular TM practice in this 1973 talk in Santa Barbara, California.

Question: Maharishi, why is it so important to be regular in meditation?

Maharishi: Considering only one aspect of TM, it is the rest that it gives. TM produces rest. Now we know from habit—if we are habituated to sleep at ten o’clock every night, and if we are regular in time with our rest, getting up at five o’clock in the morning—if we are regular with the hours of rest, then health is better. Regularity in habits of eating and resting adds a great deal to good health.

When the mind settles down during the TM technique, the body gains a profound state of rest

Meditation also is a procedure of taking rest—much deeper than deep sleep. So if our system is habituated to take deep rest in time every day, that will be a great help to maintain good health. Regularity is very, very helpful for maintaining good health.

It’s very simple to follow, just considering only one aspect of rest, because it’s such a profound rest. And if we expose our system to this profound rest every day at the same time, then the cycle of rest and activity and freshness gets established. All effort should be made to be regular in meditation. And according to our routine, we make the time ourselves, and that is the time, and that’s it

Veteran story: Bruno Guevremont

Changing mind, changing self

In 2019, he also trained in Transcendental Meditation, a simple mental technique that teaches practitioners how to settle their minds and their bodies, and reinforce the mind-body connection. “I did lots of research into different ways to care for your mental health, and I read that meditation can be good for you,” he recalls. “After meditation, I feel so chill, so incredibly peaceful. It helps you achieve a position of wellness, so that you can make the right decisions in life for yourself,” says Bruno.

Ray Dalio’s best investment tips to start the new year

Jacob Wolinsky January 12, 2022

Meditating is a great way to success

One of the peculiarities that set Dalio apart from most successful investors is his spiritual side. He claims to find all the answers to his questions through meditation, and told CNBC: “Transcendental Meditation has probably been the single most important reason for whatever success I’ve had.”

In 1982, at the age of 33, Dalio lost all his money in the markets. Thanks to transcendental meditation he was able to rely on reflection and contemplation to rebuild his confidence and, consequently, his business.

His daily meditation routine helped him go from bankruptcy to being one of the richest men in the world. So, he is a huge advocate of not following your sentiments when it comes to investing: “Not being controlled by an emotion helps to see things at a higher level.”
